In America, the system varies widely because the schools are controlled by the state governments. There are two main types of schedules that a school district may use. "Traditional" is with shorter breaks throughout the year, with a long summer and "Year-Round" is when medium length breaks are taken throughout the year and summer break isn't especially long.
For individual class schedules, my school has seven periods. First period starts at 7am and 7th period ends at 3pm. Most students take periods 2-7 and go from 8-3, however upperclassmen usually go from periods 1-5 or 1-6, as the the earlier you start, the earlier you get out. There is a lot of freedom with schedules at my school. I take 6 classes a day with 56 minute periods. I have 5 minutes between classes because my campus is huge (20 buildings). Schedules greatly vary even within school districts, though. One high school in my city has eight periods and goes from 7am-4pm. Some schools work on block scheduling which is going to 3 classes one day and 3 classes the other day, so you'd only go to a certain class every-other day. The only downside is that classes are generally over an hour and a half. So... what are schools like where you live?
